About Our Assembly
The Marquette Assembly 0188 with its Sir Knight members of the Fourth Degree is the most prestigious arm of the Knights of Columbus. Its purpose of patriotism stands for God and country. Members don social baldrics at local events but wear the well-recognized colors of regalia that are seen at events Bishops attend. Our Sir Knights are also often present at Eucharistic Adorations. Having been developed to demonstrate patriotism for country and faith, the Marquette Assembly is made up of Sir Knights, that is Fourth Degree knights, whose sole purpose is to promote and support the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic church, its country, and all parish members.
The Marquette Assembly has provided over 100 years of service to its member knights, Catholic Parishes, and community. It was officially chartered on April 1, 1912. Having been representative of an area that was once northwest, west, and south of Chicago including the areas of McHenry, Rockford, and Kankakee. It is now restricted to the South Elgin, Aurora, and Oswego areas. Its honor guard can be seen at Catholic churches, funerals, weddings, Catholic Church and School ground breakings, dedications, parades, and special events important to Catholics or KofC.
We who are knights!
We who are knights are members of Catholic Parishes who want to bring dignity, justice, and integrity to America. We do it at the grass roots level yet being part of a national organization make a difference around the world. A good knight is one who pays his dues and is active in at least one event knowing full well that when his schedule permits he will do more. We want to make a difference in our parishes, community, and country. We do it in day tight activities-one event at a time. We do only what our schedule, family, and job permits abiding by the good precepts of the Catholic church. We are practicing Catholics of the Roman Catholic Church who believe in family, God, and cooperative work. We love God and man and always like to be faithful to God and family. We believe in family, friends, food, and fun. We move moguls but could always use more good men to move mountains.
Most of the charitable work is left to the Councils but the brotherhood, church participation, and patriotic exposure is what makes the Fourth Degree the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus.
We are a brotherhood, who as Jesus Christ, have no lines separating the poor from the wealthy, the educated from the not so, or the tax collector from the medical worker or school teacher. We are lawyers, doctors, school teachers, business men, carpenters, electricians, social workers, engineers, retail clerks, managers, and laborers. We all want to make a better world one day or one action at a time.
Why become a Sir Knight
There are two reasons for a Knight of Columbus to become a Sir Knight.
It is important for people to complete things they start. Becoming a Fourth degree is the highest order of Knighthood one can achieve. Like getting the college degree as opposed to just attending college, the personal satisfaction of completion can only be shared by those who do it. The program to become a Fourth degree is so overwhelming that pride is most likely a side effect of this process. Pride to be Catholic, pride to be a knight, and pride of the brotherhood is a contagious result of the Fourth Degree of Patriotism.
Only Sir Knights can wear regalia. This distinction is the major purpose of the order. Regalia is worn not to bring attention to one’s self as some naïve may think but to promote God, the Catholic Church, and one’s country. These knights may have served in the military or not, who come together to honor others. Their presence often brings reverence and an indescribable element to formal proceedings.
We at the Marquette Assembly urge all knights to make the final commitment to God and Country and its brotherhood.
